I agree. Every new idea or application in technology is something that is created to make our lives easier or more entertaining. These applications usually solve problems of existing applications, or add missing ingredients. Whether or not something already exists is irrelevant. There would be no Keurig if they stopped development because coffee makers already existed.

I totally agree Eric. It seems that pressure has caused lots of folks to be a bit overzealous. I understand short term pressures, but making reactionary decisions is usually never good in the long-term.

Most large/medium companies these days are skewed toward actions that will bring results during the next two or three quarters, with a quick boot to the CEO who can't or won't deliver. Who knows if the downturn in the U.S. economy would have been so bad if a critical mass of companies had used it as an opportunity to improve operations instead of immediately laying off all non-essential staff.

Sorry I called your baby ugly ;-) But, I think some good parenting and nurturing will help it grow up to be a strong, successful man. BTW, I could be out to lunch with my opinion so you may want to get a few other people's feedback.

Penny, thanks for the comment. I'm a storyteller as well, and often use stories to help show the value of social media.

But at the end of the day people need to take responsibility for their own success. And, the point of my post was to illustrate how silly it is for people to sit with their 'arms crossed, lips pouting' thinking 'I know better than the rest of the world'.

Hi Mike. I'm wondering if you've tried using storytelling techniques to show rather than tell your audience about social media. Can you describe a business social media success story using heroes and action and a successful conclusion to "sell" your audience on the benefits of social media? Storytelling can sometimes get through to listeners better than facts and logic as they respond emotionally and can really relate to what you're saying. Just an idea - storytelling is my passion, just like social media is yours :)

Natasha, I think taking conversations offline is totally appropriate and in many cases very desirable. Some conversations aren't for public consumption.

Also organizations need to respect privacy of their customers. It would be ill-advised for an organization to ask for a customer email address on a Facebook page as that information is totally public.

What are your thoughts on taking the conversation offline when it is situation where it needs to be diffused? Ex. Customer complains and the company says "Please email us here and check your Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn inbox for more information."
