Approve the Blogger, not the Post

Consistency and control are values that are at odds with social media.

If those values are your part of your mantra you may need to rethink  them if you wish to be successful in this space.

You haven’t controlled the conversation for some time. Get over it. And, nothing is worse than being consistently bad.

Instead of spending your time trying to control every blog post or tweet from your organization, spend time on hiring people that you trust to communicate on your behalf.

If you hire great people you won’t need to give them a set of guidelines.

The Key to Social Marketing: Being Helpful

“If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them.” – Dalai Lama

Being helpful is an unassailable position.

Your neighbour isn’t going to get mad at you for mowing their grass, or filling their car with gas. Your friend isn’t going to hate you for helping to paint a fence or fix a flat. Even if you suck at all of these things, it is hard to criticize somebody who is trying to be genuinely helpful.

If you’re afraid of ‘doing the wrong thing’ in your social media channels then simply try to be helpful. Write a post that helps your colleagues understand a common problem. Share a tweet that your followers will find interesting. Encourage somebody to keep writing their blog by posting a positive comment.

Even if you do it wrong, you do it right.

Quotable Quotes

If you need to explain a story you haven’t refined it enough. It’s needs to be simple, compelling and easy to remember.

Great quotes are powerful stories.

Roy Romanow, former Premier of Saskatchewan, once said to me, “If you are explaining you are losing. Always be advocating.”

It’s a simple, yet important rule. One that I always keep tucked away in my memory for those times when I need it most.
