Media Conference

Today I went to a media strategy conference hosted by IABC Saskatoon. The highlight of the day was listening to Barb Phillips speak about basic media planning. Nothing was overly new to me, but it was a good refresher.

The most amusing part of the day was listening to media sales people talk about their respective fields. All (except for Ryan at zu.com) seemed just a little desperate (ok really desperate is more accurate).

I’m not saying that radio, television, print, or outdoor media are not important…but they all tried to downplay the Internet while trying to hide their dwindling viewership in their presentation of statistics.

Overall it was a good day.

I thought this was cool enough to post. Real-time visualization of digg.com; a pretty cool way to visualize the internet.

Syncronized marketing

The other night we went for supper at Las Palapas in Saskatoon. The food was excellent, the decor interesting and the overall vibe was kinda cool. They served water in these thick, seemingly hand made, glassware. They had interesting hot sauces, and a super cool menu. It was truly remarkable experience….almost.

The one little thing that threw me off was on the first page of their menu they had a promotion which read, “FREE – Join our loyalty program.” It was poorly designed and written, and was remarkably cheesy and totally out of sync with the rest of the restaurant. I left wondering why they would be so detailed with everything else, and then ‘half-ass’ their marketing.

If your going to commit to being remarkable…commit.
